When we speak of the six days of creation, we mean literal days of 24 hours each. Why exactly 24 hours?
Because His words are eternal (God does not change the laws He established). When He says “day,” it means 24 hours, because God placed all the celestial bodies in the solar system. Alongside this, physical and mathematical constants also never change (just as 1 + 1 = 2, always and forever). The entire Bible is written literally. To understand it correctly, we must consider the original Hebrew language and the historical culture of the Old Testament era, as well as the Greek language and context of the second part of the Bible. When Scripture is read in its original language and context, there is no room for unfounded metaphors or figurative meanings. Only prophecies are written in metaphors for special reasons, but the rest of the Bible is practically a historical account, including the Book of Genesis itself.
In addition, literal 24-hour days have deep symbolic importance because they provide a powerful metaphor and pattern for the human workweek and the seventh day of rest. People rest on the seventh day just as their God rested, celebrating each week a kind of “birthday” of planet Earth.
This structure is also a metaphor for the famous verse: “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” (2 Peter 3:8; Psalm 90:4). This insight fuels the theological theory of a total of 7,000 years of history, in which six millennia correspond to work and human history, while the seventh millennium represents a Sabbath millennium of rest. The Creator’s Astronomical and Mathematical Imprint
The Sun is positioned to illuminate the planet during the day, enabling photosynthesis and other essential processes while giving us physical and temporal orientation.
The Moon keeps the night from being pitch dark while the Sun is no longer strong, naturally signaling to our bodies that it is time to sleep. In other words, the Moon shines just enough not to wake us, yet enough for us to see a hand in front of our face at night.
The perfect alignment of the Sun and Moon during an eclipse, across a space measured in millions of kilometers, is a statistically impossible coincidence. In addition, the Sun is exactly 400 times farther from Earth than the Moon. Since the Sun is also exactly 400 times larger than the Moon, these two factors cancel each other out perfectly. That is why, from Earth, the two bodies appear exactly the same size in the sky, making that perfect eclipse possible.
The number 400 is extremely significant in the Bible. Alongside this astronomical precision, the number 400 also symbolizes the 400 years of prophetic silence in biblical history, the period between the last Old Testament prophets and the coming of Jesus Christ.
Of course, an atheist will say: “But if there are billions of celestial bodies, it is quite logical that there is at least one, if not more, planets where conditions for life exist.”
But so far we have mentioned only the position of the Sun and Moon for the normal functioning of living beings. Fundamental physical constants (such as gravity, the electromagnetic force, and the strong nuclear force coupling constant) are tuned with unimaginable precision. Even a minimal change in any of these values would make the universe hostile to life, pointing to intelligent design rather than mere probability.
Therefore, if we can conclude that God is not contradictory on the basis of both religious texts and the laws of physics and mathematics that always hold, it makes no sense that God would allow a day at the beginning of the Bible to last a thousand or a billion years, while just a few chapters later a day lasts 24 hours.
The Harmony of Nature Woven with Biblical Symbolism
The Creator’s design is visible in our everyday experience as well. Observe how nature changes through the seasons:
- In summer, when the days are longer (and there are no weather conditions to hinder our work), nights last about 8-9 hours. That is exactly as much time as science has proven a person needs to regenerate.
- In winter, when temperatures fall, the Creator used an astronomical change, the lengthening of the nights, to create conditions that make it easier for us to enter a state of rest. This extended darkness is not merely an absence of light, but a deliberately placed “biological switch” that helps us fall asleep more easily and conserve energy for longer.
Our organism, designed to be in harmony with this rhythm, naturally tends toward rest during winter nights in order to conserve body heat and restore strength. Science confirms this tendency in people and the living world, confirming that the entire system, from the planet’s rotation to our metabolism, is designed as a home that cares for our survival.
This is neither a coincidence nor the result of chaotic evolution in which man’s oldest ancestor was a single-celled organism. It is proof that the world was designed as a home. Just as a house has light switches and systems for maintaining temperature, the entire cosmos is designed to support the human rhythm.
Interesting Facts and Biblical Numbers
The Law of Thirds: In biblical symbolism, the number three and its derivatives often signify completeness and divine order. It is fascinating to notice that during the solstices, the extremes of summer and winter, light and darkness are divided precisely according to the principle of “one-third to two-thirds”:
- In summer: The night lasts approximately 8 hours, which is one-third of 24 hours.
- In winter: The day lasts approximately 8 hours, which is again one-third of 24 hours.
The Equinox as Perfect Balance: When the spring or autumn equinox arrives, we have a perfect division of 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. The number 12 is fundamental to the biblical structure: the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 apostles, and the 12 months. This is not a coincidence, but a reflection of the structure the Creator embedded into the very rotation of Earth.
